Knowledge is POWER: Learning Adventures Ignite Reading Comprehension

Stratford Elementary 1st graders dressed in lab coats, surgical glasses and organ aprons.

First graders at Stratford Elementary are diving into an engaging world of hands-on learning that brings reading comprehension to life, through added activities that fuel their curiosity and critical thinking skills.

The Classroom Grant enabled teachers Taryn Wilhelms, Chelsy Scholtz, and Michelle Shively, to implement this project to bring the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum to life for their students.

“Recently, students had a blast ‘operating’ while wearing their white coats and surgical glasses, putting together the digestive system, and building skeletons,” Wilhelms said. “It was a fantastic way to engage them in what they’ve been hard at work learning about on the human body systems!”

The grant funded reusable items for various units, including operation stations and organ aprons for the Human Body section. Additional materials will support upcoming units on Fairy Tales, Ancient Civilizations, American History, Astronomy, Earth’s Geology, and Animals and Plants. This year alone, 70 first-grade students will benefit from these resources, with many more students expected to enjoy these enriched learning experiences in the future.

“Good readers tend to excel across all subjects,” Scholtz noted. “The hands-on activities this grant supports are helping students retain information and develop skills they’ll use throughout their education.”
