For Alex Thacker, a 2011 graduate of Bennington High School, the lessons learned during his time in Bennington Public Schools extended far beyond the classroom. Now, he’s giving back in a way that directly impacts the next generation of students.
Through his role at Weed Man Lawn Care, Alex helped coordinate a generous donation of Career and Technical Education (CTE) equipment to Bennington High School. The contribution – made possible by the Weed Man cooperative, along with its franchisees and shareholders – includes tools such as Infinity tools, a router table, crosscut sled, table saw, nail guns, and more. These additions are already enhancing hands-on learning experiences for students in shop classes, equipping them with valuable, real-world skills.
“As a proud graduate of Bennington High School, having attended BPS since kindergarten, I wanted to give back to the school that did so much for me,” he shared. “It was an easy decision to make this donation on behalf of my organization.”
After graduating, Alex attended the University of Nebraska Omaha, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. While his career path led him into business, his experience in Bennington’s CTE classes left a lasting impression.
“It means a lot to make an impact on students, especially in the Career and Technical Education program, because those areas greatly helped me in my life,” he said. “I still use some of the furniture I made in wood shop all those years ago.”
That connection is what made this donation especially meaningful. Alex understands firsthand how hands-on learning can shape confidence, creativity, and lifelong skills.
“If we could even be a small part in helping students learn new life skills that set them up for future success, or even just build something they have fond memories of forever… that sounded pretty cool to us,” said Alex.
This gift is also a reflection of BPS Foundation’s recent focus to facilitate more community connections to expand opportunities for students.
When Alex first reached out, he knew he wanted to give back—but wasn’t sure how. BPS Foundation was able to work with district leaders and high school staff to identify a need that aligned both with school priorities and Weed Man Lawn Care’s giving goals.
The result is a thoughtful, impactful investment in students—one that ensures access to updated tools and meaningful learning opportunities for years to come.
Alex’s story is a powerful reminder of the role alumni play in shaping the future. His generosity not only honors the education he received, but also helps create new opportunities for students to learn, build, and succeed.
